Product Review
Amazon.com essential recording
Ennio Morricone's Academy Award-nominated score captures the conflict between 18th-century Jesuit missionaries trying to convert the native Indians, and the slavers who want to destroy them. In keeping with the serious subject matter and epic scope of Roland Joffé's film, the score is by turns grave, lyrical, and tense. Ever inventive, Morricone mixes liturgical chorales, native drumming, and Spanish-influenced guitars, often in the very same track, to capture the drama of the culture clash. His trademark lyricism also comes through, notably in the beautiful themes for "Gabriel's Oboe" and "The Mission." Not as over-the-top as his well-known spaghetti Western scores, The Mission shows Morricone at his dramatic best. --Heidi MacDonald

Summary: The Mission CD 2010-07-20
Comment: So glad to get our hands on this music - which is gorgeous. We saw the movie and wanted the music. You don't usually find this in the stores.

Summary: Amazing Morricone Soundtrack From 1986. 2010-04-23
Comment: The film The Mission is a full blown experiance in itself.
This soundtrack can stand alone without the film.

However although I find the first 13 tracks fantastic, for me the remaining 7 are not so good.
The eariler pieces are mostly upbeat and glorious in their presentation.
The latter are not much fun and while I realise the film takes a tradgic turn, there is a small element of hope right at the end which this soundtrack has missed.

To conclude I recommend the film very highly and then the aforementioned highlights.

Summary: A soundtrack befitting a great movie 2009-10-15
Comment: As soundtracks go, this one is not as epic or dymanic as, say, that of Dances with Wolves or Children of Dune. What this soundtrack does boast is one of the most beautiful themes you will ever hear during your sojourn on this planet. Played on an oboe, daring in its simplicity, it is absolutely captivating. It expresses both sorrow and grandeur, and as such it nicely complements both the storyline as well as the breath-taking cinematography of the film. This is by far Ennio Morricone's most popular & memorable soundtrack - and for good reason!

Summary: The Mission Succeeds 2009-05-27
Comment: I saw the Mission in 1987 when it first debuted. I loved it then and I love seeing it again on DVD two decades later. The music is beautiful; the story tragic, with a strong cathartic ending which enriches the story well-chosen. Robert De Nero and Jeremy Irons work well together here along with the Anglo-American-Irish and Latin American support cast.

The South American setting with its breath-taking scenery could not be improved upon anywhere else in the world.
The native tribes too are genuine and their story and lives are worth preserving for the sake of all humanity.

The human tragic story is life-affirming and not totally despairing.
The quotation from the gospel of John stating that the light of God's
love will not be dissolved by the darkness of this tragedy and others tragedies.

Our species on this planet needs to improve - two centuries later- and The Mission emphasizes this from beginning to end.
