Barbra Streisand was on an incredible success streak in the late seventies, and she racked up another huge hit with Gold disco single "The Main Event/Fight" (#3 Pop, #5 Adult Contemporary) in summer of '79. As a film, THE MAIN EVENT had many shortcomings, but it was good fun and a pretty big box office hit. The soundtrack album is pretty much the same: the instrumentals and tracks by others are filler, and the whole disc only comes to life during Barbra's three (?!) renditions of the title song. The ballad and short (45 rpm) versions of the song are fun, but it's the full eleven-and-a-half minute extended version that really shines. The song (which is actually a medley of two separate songs) is a typically silly disco concoction, but Streisand's performance gives it an almost otherworldly power, with more impossibly big notes than one person can count. I bought the cassette in 1981 and have looked for the cd for a long time now so I finally found this and there is truly 1 reason for this cd to even to be released- the 11:37 minute disco mix of "The Main Event". This was a huge step for Barbra in that she finally went and followed most of the acts in 1979 and did disco. This song went as far as #13 on the disco charts and even crossed over to the black charts. The rest of the cd is blah - in that I only play the disco version and that is all.

Barbra Streisand's "The Main Event/Fight" is one of the best disco songs ever, and on this CD you get to hear it in three different versions. The rest of the disc isn't that great, but Barbra's song is worth the price alone. The fact that the cover features a picture of Ryan O'Neal shirtless helps things quite a bit.
