Elton John doesn't seem like a natural choice to write for a Disney musical, but he rose to the task on The Lion King, transcending his usual penchant for the softest of soft rock. Sir Elton's collaboration with Tim Rice (former writing partner of Andrew Lloyd Webber) helps connect the soundtrack to the theatrical lineage of all Disney musicals--so much so that, like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King was eventually adapted for Broadway. Undistinguished songs like "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" are far outnumbered by stirring, stately tunes that lent the film so much of its sense of pageant and play. --John Sanchez

Summary: The Lion King: Special Edition 2010-06-29
Comment: It's a good cd, but . . . . I read the reviews before I bought it and some of them mentioned that the extra Elton John songs were not reason enough to buy the special edition. Being an Elton John fan, I bought it anyway. What I was disappointed in is that there are many original songs from the movie that were cut out of this addition. I think I'll still try to find the original Disney cartoon version with ALL the songs from the movie.

Comment: If you love the movie, you will love this CD. It includes all the songs from the movie. This was one of the only soundtracks I have ever bought because I love all the songs from the movie and this CD is perfect to remember all the songs from the movie.

Summary: Music of the Pridelands 2009-12-17
Comment: Ive always loved The Lion King; it has been a part of my childhood ever since I saw it the first time in theaters. Now that I have it on DVD, I can watch it and be amazed at its stunning animation and powerful plot. As for the music, I'd say that Hans Zimmer, Elton John, and Tim Rice have done a fantastic job. Zimmer gives his usual robust flavor to the score while adding traditional African instruments. It's one of my favorites from Zimmer, along with The Thin Red Line and Crimson Tide. Meanwhile, John and Rice have created some truly memorable songs that can be very hard to forget. From "Circle of Life" to "Can You Feel The Love Tonight," it's hard not to love the music that you grew up on. While I do have some minor quarrels ("I Just Can't Wait To Be King" can get quite annoying at times), this is still a brilliant soundtrack for one of the greatest animated films of all time. Kudos to Disney for this one.
