What a smile-in-a-box this CD is! You can hardly help tapping your feet or bopping your head as you listen to it. I've been a fan of Toots for years, along with other reggae of that era; this CD was replacing a couple of older albums. I was expecting more from the CD. Unfortunately, I must have gotten a lemon. The sound is a little muffled, the mid-range is muddy, the highs seem compressed or clipped, and the bass is indistinct. Sounds similar in my car, and on my Klipsch (horn-tweeter) computer speakers, and on my Paradigm Monitor 7's on the "real" stereo. And the Klipsch & the Paradigm are noted for teh "brightness" of their sound! It's as if it was recorded from behind the drum set, with the monitors facing away from the microphone. Sounds like a bad bootleg copy. The mp3 preview clip on the Amazon web site is brighter & more forward-sounding than the actual CD! I may return it & try for a replacement.
Anyway, Toots & the Maytals get a 5-star rating, as does...Read more

When listening to this C.D., you can just sense the great joy and fun they had recording it. It is the kind of C.D. you can't help but feel happy and wanna get up and dance. Especially with great tracks like the remake of John denver's country road. (my personal favorite) I am also partial to Pomp and Pride. Anyone who likes Reggae/ska will probably love this c.d. Toots and the Maytails were a very important part in early Reggae music in the 60's and 70's It is also a great starter disc for people who have interest in reggae music. It is truely a classic that stands alone

Toots and the Maytals have the happiest rythm and beats. I just want to smile and dance when I listen to this. I am not familiar enough with the group to know if these would be the right song selections for the ultimate greatest hits album, but I do know that I like em a lot! All the songs are layed back, happy, and just make me think of tropical beaches and good times. If you have heard "take me home" or some of there other stuff, you probably won't be disappointed if you buy this.
