Before the obsession with Pokémon (or the Iron Chef, for that matter) and post-Ultraman fever (the first time around), North America was swept up in Japan's envelope-pushing superhero-fashioned cartoons, which eventually became known as both Japanimation and anime. Now hip mainstream Japanimation has made an indelible mark upon the pop culture of post-boomers, Gen X'ers, and beyond. In tribute to the now-classic animations and their music, Rhino has assembled The Best of Anime, a collection of theme songs from shows dating back to the earliest fare ("Gigantor," "Astro Boy") and reaching decades ahead to include "Cutey Honey" and the theme from Sailor Moon. Irrepressibly linked to highly stylized animation, these songs (largely sung in Japanese) affect the mod Technicolor ambiance of their respective vehicles, making for hokey hilarity and high-spirited enjoyment. --Paige La Grone

Summary: Everybody Jumping Up! 2007-01-17
Comment: I got this for the "Speed Racer" theme song, and loved the whole disc. I haven't seen any of the other shows represented, but nobody does hardcore pop like the Japanese.

Summary: GIGAAAAAANTOR! 2003-04-28
Comment: GIGANTOR IS THE BEST SONG EVER. To the reviewer who said it sounded like something out of a 50's cartoon, well, you sound like something out of a stupid cartoon. I don't like you. I'm listening to this CD right now and Gigantor is my jamz, homie.

No, seriously, Gigantor is awesome. If you think I am kidding, I am not. This is not a joke. One listen to the sample and you'll realize how awesome it is and how stupid you were before for not liking it.
Also, see Speed Racer Theme for more awesome.

Now I have to go play Pokemans.

I wanna be the very best!
That no one ever was!
To catch them is my real test!
To train them is my cause!
I will travel across the land!
Searching far and wide!
Each pokemon to understand!
The power that's inside!

Pokemon, gotta catch'em all!
It's you and me!
I know it's my destiny!
Pokemon, oh, you're my best friend!
In a world we must defend!
Pokemon, oh, a heart so true!
Our courage will pull us through!
You teach me and I'll teach you!
Pokémon!
Gotta catch'em all!
Gotta catch'em all!
Pokémon!

Summary: Good Assortment 2003-02-14
Comment: Anime music. There has always been a charm to this music from Japan with words the non-speaker can't understand. Generally fast and upbeat, it is practically what would have happened to music if the 1980s never ended. Let's get one thing straight here - it would be outright impossible to compile a collection of anime music that everyone is going to enjoy. The sheer amount of available tracks is huge compared to how many you can cram onto one CD.

That said, this CD does a fairly good job of covering some of the older anime series. They run the gamut from fast and exciting (Active Heart) to calm and reflective (Voices).

The reason why I gave it four stars was mainly because the dubbed songs sound very out-of-place and disrupt the flow of things. There's a charm to hearing words you can't understand. The Speed Racer theme and the Gigantor theme, dubbed in English, are just kitsch tracks I skip over. The CD would have been better served by either keeping the original versions of these tracks, or using something more in-line with the rest of the music (like music from Bubblegum Crisis, a suspicious omission).

I liked this CD overall though. We all know that anime music CDs out of Japan are prohibitively expensive for most of us, so Rhino's attempt to sell a cheaper "greatest hits" CD is appreciated. Especially in this time when music is becoming so homogenized, it's nice to know that Rhino was willing to take a risk here. A more comprehensive, updated multi-CD collection in the future would be great.
