Like most "overnight sensations," Vonda Shepard had been slogging away for quite a spell--more than a decade's worth of touring, and three previous albums, to be precise--before getting to grab the brass ring via the hit TV show Ally McBeal. This disc reprises most of the cover songs Shepard performed during the series' first year, from the ubiquitous "Hooked on a Feeling" to a lovely reading of the '60s nugget "Walk Away Renee." But to Shepard's credit, the smattering of originals don't suffer too much in comparison: in fact, her "Searchin' My Soul" is one of the album's strongest moments. --David Sprague

Summary: Good CD for Ally fans, Vonda fans look elsewhere 2008-10-15
Comment: If you were a fan of Ally McBeal, and you want a CD of songs from the TV show, you will enjoy this CD. However, if you're looking for a Vonda Shepard CD, you'd do better off buying one of her solo albums. I recommend "By 7:30," "It's Good Eve," "Chinatown," or her new CD, "From The Sun." Vonda only wrote four of the songs on this CD, and the rest are covers. She sings them well, but you really can't appreciate her talent as a composer and lyricist until you've heard an entire album of her material. Although this CD introduced me and hundreds of other people to Vonda Shepard, it's really not the best representation of her music.
Still, Vonda Shepard fans might find this CD worthwhile if they want "Will You Marry Me" or the Ally McBeal version of "Searching My Soul," neither of which are not available on any other CD. (There is an acoustic version of "Searching My Soul" on Vonda's 1992 album "The Radical Light," but it's not as good as the Ally McBeal version.) Otherwise, skip this CD unless you were a fan of Ally McBeal or you want to hear Vonda sing a bunch of covers of 1960's songs.

Summary: Make it stop! Make it stop! 2008-08-20
Comment: Contained on this CD are 14 convincing arguments against the capitalist system. If you want to include the cover art, make that 15. Total dreck. Ms. Shepard ought to get a job working for the local meat market. If she can butcher a side of beef as thoroughly as she butchers these songs, she'll be Employee of the Month in no time.

Comment: excellent CD. I had this CD once before and lost it in a divorce. Amazon was the only place I could find to replace it.

Summary: Boring Covers but The Few Originals Merit 2 Stars!, 2006-03-12
Comment: From the point of view that this album does indeed contain the tracks that come from the Ally McBeal TV series, this album doesn't disappoint, however, from the point of view that the covers are very inferior renditions of the original, this album makes for very boring listening indeed. If you are going to cover somebody else's work, you should either do it very differently or a lot better than the original. Vonda does neither here but to her credit, the first track which is an original, "Searchin' My Soul" is the best track on the album and is the sole redeeming factor overall. Get this only if you want a souvenir or a memento of what you liked about the tv series but not if you are looking for a great music album.

Summary: Fond remembrances 2004-01-01
Comment: I am more convinced than ever that the sages had it all wrong -it's not absence but music that makes the heart grow fonder. At least that's the case with this album, where these familiar oldies are given new life by Vonda Shepard. It's not far from the truth to say that Vonda and her music are as integral to the show as the romances, lawyers, trials and tribulations. "The End of the World" was a great rendition that perfectly caught the heartbreak the words implied. Good collection.
