This MGM musical helps to epitomize the genre. The 1952 film starred Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds. Reynolds's tracks, particularly "All I Do Is Dream of You" tend to make her sound like one of the munchkins from The Wizard of Oz, which is unfortunate. It's Gene Kelly's songs that are the most enjoyable. The title track is still wonderful, and so engaging you'll want to swing on lightpoles all over town. An outtake of Kelly's version of "All I Do Is Dream of You" is another gem, and the M-G-M Studio Orchestra is at its flawless best throughout--even if some of the incidental music sounds like a Tex Avery cartoon score. --Scott Wilson

Well, I wish they had "left in" the tapping feet, but otherwise, this album is the original soundtrack all right! I especially liked it that different versions of some songs were used ("Would You", "All I Do Is Dream of You", "Beautiful Girl", etc.), some only slightly different and others fairly radically. Too bad lyrics weren't included in the booklet! If I may be picky, I would have also liked it more were the photos in color. Otherwise, I can't think of anything else to say other than that if the movie's touched your heart, then this CD ought to do the same!

In my opinion, three characteristics make a great soundtrack. First, you have to have good songs to start with. Second, the soundtrack has to capture the essence of the movie. In other words, you can listen to a song and know exactly what was going on in the movie when that song was playing. Third, listening to the soundtrack should make you want to watch the movie again. The Singin' in the Rain soundtrack has all of these characteristics. If you doubt how good the songs from Singin' in the Rain are, then, you have not watched the movie enough. Unlike many soundtracks, the Singin' in the Rain soundtrack has ALL of the songs from the movie on it. Plus, it has outtakes and supplemental songs as well. As you listen to each song, you can recall the exact dance steps that were being performed during that particular part of the song. Also, as you listen to "Would You," you can't help but think of Lina trying to sing it and missing the beat. Listening...Read more

I had this album in my cart at iTunes waiting to buy and before I decided to buy (a few weeks later) you could no longer get the album you had buy songs only and some of the songs came up missing. I checked with Amazon and I could get the whole album cheaper than they had it listed at iTunes if I bought all the songs and Amazon had all the songs included in the album price. So... there you go.
