Mannix - O.S.T. (Reis)

A classic Lalo soundtrack that's every bit as good as Bullitt and Mission Impossible. Only available on vinyl until this much needed reissue. Much better than the recent re-recording by Lalo on his Adelph label.

Collector's Choice has finally given us the reissue of the original television score to Mannix. It is a delight to relive this music after all these years. The original liner notes from the LP are included as well. The sound is surprisingly good for a recording that, I am guessing, had few rehearsals (sometimes the trombones are just on this side of struggling with their parts). Still, it brings back a lot of memories. While some of the tunes sound dated (and others do not), it only adds to the charm of this release!

Alone among all other film composers,Lalo Schifrin with the Mannix theme shows he can Out-write and Out-Jazz Quincy and Mancini(though I love them too ofcourse!). The original arrangement went along perfectly with the good looks of Mike Connors and Gail Fisher ;And showed along with Bullet,Enter the Dragon and Mission that Lalo(!) is the one who writes with the most sophistication and musicianship and that the wedding of Strings,Brass and Beauty(which would reach it's culmination in 1974 with Med Flory and Company's arrangement of Charlie Parker in Supersax Plays Bird with Strings)began with the Hot,Jazzy lyricism of this great artist.-Christopher I.Coleman
