Summary: What Music is All About 2008-11-16
Comment: Little Women is a beautiful testament to what happens when a film is done right, a score is done right and art is done right. This score brings one into the colors and emotions of the film while slowly manipulating your heart and soul into a state of complete warmth and hope. I can't describe the feelings that this CD will make you experience... It's too good for that.

Summary: Beautiful But Disappointing 2008-02-03
Comment: While the Little Women film was wonderful, the accompanying soundtrack was disappointing. The tracks appear in random order with no rhyme or reason. Logic suggests it would have been appropriate to play them in sequence. However, each song included is lovely. The main title, Orchard House, is frostily beautiful and lyrical. It calls to mind the simplicity and serenity of a New England winter. Valley of the Shadow, while breathtakingly solemn, plays for just over two minutes, which is far too short. Several other tracks: Scarlet Fever, Two Couples, Burdens, Harvest Time, Amy Abroad, and The Laurence Boy, give the listener much too little. Each lasts only 90 seconds or less. For the hefty pricetag (I purchased it years earlier at a national chain bookstore, yes, I know, stupid) I think the editor should have given more bang for my listening buck. Devotees of the film will enjoy the cd.

Summary: Excellent, but short! 2007-08-03
Comment: I love this movie, but it was the music that spoke to me the most. It was lyrical, engaging, it resonated. And Thomas Newman has managed to communicate the soul of New England with a sound that is the very essence of American.
Dotted with a few historical/classical pieces, it is the lush beauty of the music that sweeps you up and transports you.
I gave the CD four stars solely for the reason I stated in the title: it is vastly too short! At only about a half an hour of music, this CD falls short of most in terms of length. Something I was disappointed to learn only AFTER I bought the CD. So in terms of length, the $8 or $9 you pay for it isn't such a bargain when it's half the length of a normal CD.
The songs too, are incredibly short, some as little as 30 seconds long, so the changes are somewhat abrupt. As a film buff, I can understand that you want to accurately portray the music as it was used in the movie. However, as a musician and avid listener, I wish Newman would have put a few more repeats in there!
Regardless of the length, I still highly recommend it. You can always do what I do: put the CD on repeat, if its length bothers you. It is still worth it.
