Summary: Wicked's Got Nothing On This 2009-01-03
Comment: I first heard Idina Menzel as I was listening to the musical styling of the broadway musical Wicked, and immediately I was like "this girl can sing!" I searched for Idina (back when I used iTunes) and downloaded her entire album, I Stand, and I was pleasantly presented with a person who 'defies gravity' and sings about songs I care about (standing up for what you believe in). She is a great singer, and she has my vote!

Comment: Idina Menzel is an acquired taste for the uninitiated or the non-theater fan. Hers is a quirky, idiosynchratic voice that can be made to serve expressive ends but can also sound harsh and shrill. Menzel's best work has been in oversized, theatrical roles in "RENT" and "Wicked" that call upon her powerhouse, other-worldly instrument to deliver socko showstoppers and power ballads. True, she has a technically topflight voice, but her tendency to bellow at the top of her lungs is extreme and without something or someone to reign her in she can become oppressive. On a pop record, quirky and oversized don't necessarily work with the mainstream approach, which Menzel is clearly attempting here, so there's bound to be trouble afoot. "I Stand" suffers dramatically from this dichotomy and the generic pop sheen these songs receive only tends to emphasize Menzel's eccentricities. In addition, the generally sub-standard material does not serve her well. Menzel is an undeniable talent and has deservedly won awards and accolades. Unfortunately, this recording attempts to shoehorn her into the bland pop princess category, which is totally at odds with her abilities and makes her sound utterly out of place. A concession to the "market"? Probably. Still, it doesn't make for a very good listen.

Summary: Biggest fan 2008-09-23
Comment: I got this album for my 18 year old daughter. She is a big fan of Idina ever since she saw Wicked. Needless to say she was not disapointed. May I point out that this is one album that I ask her to crank up whenever she plays it!!

Comment: After hearing so much about Idina and her newly anticipated album, "I Stand", I knew I had to have the cd. So I just have to say I was not disappointed. Idina's voice is amazing and hard to beat. Each song is different on it's own but put together on the album, a perfect fit. There is something on this album for everyone!

Summary: Pretty & pleasant voice; a very strong voice 2008-09-07
Comment: I had not heard her music until I listened to her cd. There are three songs that I really enjoy-I Stand, Gorgeous, and My Own Worst Enemy. I Stand is my favorite-cannot get it out of my mind... I am reminded of Shania Twain-different, not as danceable, but just as strong. The more I listen to the cd, the more I like it. Perfect for taking a bath, dealing with a breakup, cleaning the house, or taking a walk! Total chick music, but very good chick music. I will make every effort to see her next time she comes around! She has a really pretty & pleasant voice; a very strong voice. I look forward to hearing more from her in the future! With the right song, I can see her with a #1 hit! The only negatives I could find on the cd is that her voice is much better than the songs.
