Product Review

Nortec Collective's Clorofila presents his long-awaited solo album 'Corridos Urbanos.' Clorofila is the stage name for Jorge Verdin, known for both his musical and graphic design contributions to Nortec. 'Corridos Urbanos' is based on stories related to Verdin from across Tijuana and Southern California. He collaborated with a variety of tambora and norteƱo musicians on tuba, accordion, clarinet, and horn parts. Although the album is mostly instrumental, there are several tracks with featured vocalists including Australian singer Supina Bytol and David J (of Bauhaus and Love and Rockets fame)

Corridos Urbanos is an amazing fusion album by Clorofila, one-fourth of the Nortec Collective. If you're a fan of Nortec's past albums, this one is a bit different. Instead of focusing on just synthesizer music, Clorofila wrote more of the music that the Norteño musicians were to perform. There are also new instruments worked into the songs, more strings and violins.

Most of the album is instrumental save for tracks like "BabyRock", as well as "Babai" with Aussie singer Supina Bytol and David J. I'm honestly not a big fan of the songs with lyrics, but the production is still great. I don't listen to just Norteño or Electronic music much, but this album offers a terrific mix. "Baja Sextoy" and "Babai" also changes the pace of the album with more of a rock feel than the other tracks.

I love the synth and percussion vibe of "El General", which is the most infectious song on the album. Llantera is also a slick song that demands you nod your head to the...Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Clorofila - Corridos Urbanos, November 15, 2011

Clorofila, part of the Nortec collective, strikes out on his own with CORRIDOS URBANOS, which nonetheless shows his connection to them immediately, with the processed bandeleon mixing in with the electro beats, while "Llantera" places it in a slightly more industrial setting, though not without its disco moments. The booty groove of "Naked Ladies" doesn't do much for me, however, and the 4/4 kick of "Arriba El Novio" doesn't quite make itself stand out. The slower breaks and warm tones of "4:15 AM" have much more personality, as does the twitchiness of "El General." But it's the pop moment that stands out brightest: "'BabyRock' Rock" is so sunny that it makes you want to dance around a sombrero, or some other Mexican cliche. Luckily Clorofila doesn't fit into any such cliche.

i have two other nortec albums (tijuana sound machine, and bulevar 2000), and both are great and i love them. this one is, unfortunately...bland, electro-poppy, insipid and dull. aside from using accordion samples instead of straight synths there is nothing norten~a, ranchera, or tex-mex about it. i was mislead into buying it because i thought another review said that it had more instrumentation on it. it does not. it has less. it is mostly generic drum beats and almost NO instrumentation whatsosever...norten~a or otherwise. sigh. also, i agree with the other reviewer who said that the singing is also deplorable. not urban. not having anything to do with corridos...or corrido-like storytelling, or tempo, or anything. you'll find more norten~a flavor at your local taco bell.
