The First AG album is one of his best!,

I bought this on vinyl when it first came out in '75 (I think). I was already aware of his instrumental prowess, particularly on guitar, as the driving force behind the Ronstadt hits YOU'RE NO GOOD and WHEN WILL I BE LOVED. He pioneered, yes, PIONEERED a style where he triple tracked highly compressed electric guitar parts to achieve sonically perfect results. True, others (Wishbone Ash, Allmans) did twin guitar parts, but nothing like what Gold did, and not sounding nearly as good. The imitators soon followed (example: STILL THE ONE by Orleans), but this album has much of the same sterling multitrack guitar sounds on several songs. And that's JUST his guitar playing- his songwriting on this, his first album, was (is) fresh and perhaps simpler than his writing style nowadays, but songs like HEARTACHES IN HEARTACHES are brisk, delicious power country/pop gems and have a Beatle-ish quality. His singing is fine, though he now feels he hadnt 'found' his voice yet. I've spoken to him...Read more

Listening to the acoustic guitar solos on 'that's why I love you', the melodic and memorable piano ballad 'Endless flight' and the beauty of 'ten years behind me', a lovely stripped down orchestrated ballad, you know this guy had talent. A great voice and multi instrumentalist. Some of the other tunes are also nice, but there is a little too much emphasis for my tastes on country music, and a couple of the songs are very similar. As for the bonus tracks, they are ok, but nothing really grabbing, although they are harmless fun. That being said, I just relistened to them and 'to be someone' is very nice, and with some minor adjustments, would have been a nice addition to the album.

I echo the words in review #1 and highly recommend the music (the music ALONE).
The copy protection, is ridiculous. It made my cd-rom drive work triple overtime, and that made me very nervous in turn. A warning would have been nice.
I'm going to rip the songs to mp3 once, make plenty of backups, and never allow this disc near my computer again.
