Product Review

For more than a decade, DeVotchKa has melded its influences from
Eastern European wedding bands to Norteno ballads into an authentic and totally original blend of popular music. The band s haunting, romantic sound evokes timeless images, attracting thousands of fans to their sold-out live shows. DeVotchKa s sound has proved particularly attractive to filmmakers, who have used DeVotchka songs to score countless films and commercials, most famously Little Miss Sunshine, for which they received a Grammy nod. With the release of the band's fifth album, 100 Lovers, the band returns to the epic settings of the Arizona desert with producer Craig Schumacher (Calexico, Neko Case) to create a new collection of haunting stories, with songs like The Man From San Sebastian delivering on their intriguing titles with enigmatic lyrics and cinematic soundscapes.

What an amazing album. While I had heard of Devotchka before (Little Miss Sunshine, etc.), this was the first album of theirs I actually purchased. I am so glad I did! I have since gotten their previous 2 albums - both of which I highly recommend. I can't think of another recent album that displays such a high level of talent, musicianship and beauty. Devotchka, and this album in particular, has been my best musical discovery of this year!

I'm on my second listen and really digging this recording. I wasn't a huge fan of a mad and faithful telling, but this album is almost on par with how it ends, grabbing with with depth and feeling, and passion, like. Honestly I think these guys have much more depth and passion than beirut or calexico which they are often compared. There is an intensity, and subtle tension, and I find it moving, it really makes you feel something. It sometimes has a bit of 80's feel but I forgive it when I hear it.

Since this is my favorite band, they can do no wrong. I may update this with a more objective, substantive review, but for now, I will just say, if you're not listening to DeVotchKa, you're really missing out on something wonderful.

Hagerman's violin has never sounded better - King's drumming keeps every song together - Schroder's haunting bass line - Urata's voice wounds and heals in the same breath. How does this compare to previous albums? It's DeVotchKa as they continue to evolve, hard to classify - completely eclectic. There are elements of Supermelodrama present in "Exhaustible". "Bad Luck Heels" shares trumpets with "We're Leaving" and "Along the Way". Is there a "Queen of the Surface Streets"? A "Transliterator"? A "How it Ends"? Of course, but it'll be something completely subjective - something that speaks to you as the listener, not me. For me, right now, it's "All the Sand in all the Sea"...

**Update.

Okay, after listening to the album 3...Read more
